Matariki

Matariki is the Māori name for a group of stars (also known as the Pleiades). 

It rises in mid-winter – late May or early June. 

For many Māori, it signals the start of a new year. Matariki literally means the 'eyes of god' (mata ariki) or 'little eyes' (mata riki).

Other countries have different names for Pleiades. Can you find out what they are?

We created a Matariki cloak with the help of our buddy classes. Here they are!

Here is Anaru and Kaha skinning the tree to smothen it so we could paint it. 

Here is what we will carve on our amazing tree. On the right there are our vegetables and to the left are our maori traditional food. Our standing wood is called pou.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori

We have kick started the week in style. Our independent learning sheet is nearly all in Te Reo (as much as Miss P could do). We are looking at place names in Aotearoa this week. Our first 2 clues for our school wide mapping activity were:

Tamaki-Makaurau

Kirikiriroa

We have to put them on the map in the correct place with the English name next to it. Miss P knows the first one but not the second.
